Steps Toward Prevention

Identify the Problem. Identifying the reason for your job stress may not be a difficult one. There are some simple questions you can ask yourself, such as:

Do I have more tasks than I can complete in a day?
Do I worry that my performance is considered insufficient?
Do I feel my accomplishments not being recognized, and thus I am trying harder so that they are?
Do I feel there are personality conflicts with co-workers or superios?
Do I come to work feeling rushed to get things started? Why?
Do I feel hurried to leave work, and do I leave things undone when I do?

These and many more issues lead to a stressful attitude about your work and work environment. To successfully find a solution to relieve stress from your workplace, you should make a list of things which cause you stress. Start by identifying your mood and mindset when you first arrive at work. Then determine when you take breaks and how you feel suring those times. Next evaluate when it is time to leave, and when you are ready to leave. Is there a discrepency, and again, what is your mood.

 

Step 2 - Dealing with the Stress. You have identified the sources of stress at work. That was the easy part. Now it is time to releive yourself of this stress.

Work will not simply go away, and few feel comfortable approaching supervisors, managers, or companies to say "I think we should hire more people so that the people here have less stress." Although there is such a thing as being overworked, many times it is not the work, but the approach to the work which is the problem.


Here are some blocks to build upon:

  • If you drive to work, do not rush the commute. The commute is just like a warm-up and cool-down period before and after an excercise. You will get there when you get there. If you are late regularly, then the problem is not the commute, but when you start your commute. Consider the commute your time to plan your day. What will you do when you get to work and how will you do it. Your commute back home should be the cool-down. Allow yourself this time to understand you have leaft work, and are going to live your life outside of work. You can think about work again on your way to work the next morning.

  • Do you spend your time at lunch working? Stop that. This is a time to relax. Just like in excercise, you need a break between routines or repetitions. No one runs a marathon every day and lives a healthy lifestyle. if you cannot get your mind off of work during lunch, then do not eat alone! Even if you must take about work, do so in a positive manner; do not spend the time criticizing or ranting (unless you can make it humorous).

  • Are you rushing through a task to get it done? Does quality suffer at the hands of haste? It may be time to evaluate the method by which the task is accomplished. Might another department of individual be able to assist in a certain task, allow your quality of work to increase? Although you will not always get what you want, you should always try to establish and keep an open line of discussion in regards to efficiency and quality with those to whom you report.

  • Do you spend time with others at work? Although excessive socializing can lead to loss in productivity, social interaction can relieve much stress. This can also lead to relationships which will lead to better cooperation in accomplishing tasks.

  • When you go home, remember that you are going home. Leave work behind. If your job forces you to take work home with you, make sure that you have alloted a given amount of time to it. You might also be interested in looking for alternative which appreciate the time you put into your work.
