FEAR OF FAILURE

Although millions of people find relaxation to be the primary cause of sleep disorders, a large percentage of people find the root of their anxiety to be in a very common fear; the fear of failure.

Stress and anxiety around the home, at school, or among friends many times comes from ones own percenption of not being good enough, not having the skills needed, not being able to commit the time required to accomplish the things we find to be important in life. We all set goals and have visions of what our life should be. When the reality of our lives is not in line with the way in which we invision it should be, we find that we are not content with ourselves. This leads to only more anxiety, as more and more things accumulate in the pile of things we want to do or have to do, but simply don't do.

Why don't we do them? We feel we can't. We feel we don't have the right stuff. We feel that in trying to attain those things, we will only find ourselves further behind, embarrassed, or worse, that we simply don't have it in us to be the person we hope to be.

This does not mean one should close their eyes, raise a sword, and go raging into battle. We must be aware that failure exists, and although it is okay to fail, it is not okay to allow that failure to mean it was not meant to be. Failure is something we grow from. Failure may mean that our approach was not correct, or that we did not have the tools to perform what we set out to. It may also mean that we have a lot to do before tackling that obstacle again.

Truly successful people not only have failed, but are very good at failing. Failure does not hurt. It does not put you in a position you were not before. What should motivate you is that by attempting to move forward, you have created more possibilities of doing so. This may come in the form of actually attaining the goal, but it may also come in the form of better understanding or developing the tools to do so next time.

You must first understand what fear truly is. You can then overcome that fear. But keep in mind; not being affraid does not make you ready to tackle the problem or reach toward a goal. You must be prepared for that as well, independant of the fear.

Common symptoms of fear:
If you think like this, then you must learn to overcome your fears

  • I will only end up looking stupid
  • I will only find out I can't do it
  • I've never been good at anything, so why now
  • I don't have time for this
  • I am what I am, and nothing is going to change that
  • There are many people just like me, what makes me think I'm able to do this
  • I don't have any special talents
